Remember vacation?

Not the flights. The feeling.

Dinners that ran late. A table full of people who were actually there. Nobody checking anything. You talked until the candles burned down and nobody could say what time it was.

You were somewhere else, so you were finally here.

Two wine glasses raised in a toast, their shadows warm on a sunlit wall

What you get back

The good part was always the people.

Put the phones down and the night gives you back everything a screen quietly takes.

The ritual

Three moves. One long night.

1

Sit down.

Recess goes in the middle of the table. Every seat gets a slot facing it. No front, no back, no head of the table.

2

File it head-down.

Everyone drops their phone in at once. It's the toast before the toast: the moment the night officially starts.

3

Be where you are.

Talk, laugh, linger. Your phone is right there, asleep. Nothing locks; you just won't want it.

The vacation feeling

Bring it home.

That slow, sunlit, nobody-is-in-a-hurry feeling isn't a place. It's what happens when nobody is looking down.

Everything here works without wifi.

Recess isn't a lockbox and it isn't a lecture. It's an invitation, sitting in the middle of the table, to be on vacation for the length of a dinner.
